Ireland have named their team to play England in a Six Nations international at Twickenham on Saturday with Jonathan Sexton bieng named ahead of Ronan O'Gara.
Fit-again Jonathan Sexton is back at fly-half, with the experienced Ronan O'Gara dropped to the bench following Ireland's 33-10 loss away to France in Paris last weekend.
Murphy, the Leicester full-back, replaced the injured Rob Kearney in the side named by Ireland coach Declan Kidney on Tuesday.
Murphy, 31, has only played three times for English club side Leicester this season since dislocating his shoulder in September.
The gifted ball-player hasn't featured in Test rugby since the final match of last year's Six Nations when Ireland beat Wales in Cardiff to complete their first grand slam in 61 years.
However, Kidney said: "Geordan's experience will compensate for his lack of rugby. Twickenham is not a ground he's unfamiliar with.
"He'll be playing against guys who he knows. That was part of the mix in giving him the nod for this one."
As for choosing three-times capped Sexton as opposed to O'Gara, who has played 95 Tests for Ireland, Kidney said: "We're blessed with two out-halves, one with huge experience, the other up and coming.
"I thought it was opportune to give Jon a go this time."
Donncha O'Callaghan returns in the second row following a knee injury that has so far ruled him out of this season's Six Nations.
O'Callaghan replaces Leo Cullen, now among the replacements.
In the front row, Rory Best comes in for Jerry Flannery after the Munster hooker was suspended for his trip on France wing Alexis Palisson.
Sean Cronin takes Best's place on a bench that also sees Shane Jennings recalled after the Leinster flanker finished a 12-week ban for eye-gouging.
Tighthead prop John Hayes is set to become the first player to win 100 caps for Ireland.
Kick off is at 1600 GMT .
